OSCAR is designed from the ground up to protect your privacy. Your health information is yours. It stays in your home, under your control, accessible only to those you choose to share it with.
Our Core Privacy Commitments
What Data OSCAR Collects
OSCAR collects only the information necessary to provide wellness support:
- Health measurements from connected devices (blood pressure, weight, pulse oximetry, etc.) that you choose to connect
- Resident profiles including names and optional photos for identification
- Preferences and settings you configure for personalized guidance
- Usage patterns within the home system to improve daily recommendations
OSCAR is a wellness companion, not a monitoring system. It does not track your location. Its camera is used on the device to recognise who is present; video is not stored.
Your voice. OSCAR listens only for your answers to its own questions, such as how you are feeling today, and turns them into words; the sound itself is discarded. There is one exception, and it is yours to choose during setup: if you tell OSCAR something that suggests your safety is at risk, and you agreed to it, OSCAR keeps an encrypted recording of that one answer, so that you, your doctor, or the person you named can hear what was said. Every time that recording is opened is logged. If you said no, OSCAR keeps only the written words.
HIPAA-Aligned Practices
While OSCAR at Home consumer products are not covered entities under HIPAA, we voluntarily adopt HIPAA-aligned practices because we believe your health information deserves the highest level of protection:
- Minimum necessary standard: We collect only the data required to provide our services
- Access controls: Authentication required for all health data access
- Encryption: Protected health information is encrypted both at rest and in transit
- Audit logging: Access to health records is logged for accountability
- Data integrity: Safeguards prevent unauthorized modification of health records
For OSCAR deployments in clinical or facility settings, OSCAR at Home will support full HIPAA compliance, including Business Associate Agreements where required.
Your Rights
You have complete control over your data:
- Access: View all data OSCAR has stored about you at any time
- Export: Download your complete health history in standard formats
- Delete: Remove any or all of your data permanently
- Restrict: Limit what data is collected or how it is used
- Disconnect: Remove any connected device at any time
Since your data is stored locally in your home, these rights are exercised directly through your OSCAR system—no requests to remote servers required.
Data Sharing
OSCAR never shares your personal health information without your explicit consent. If you choose to share:
- Care provider sharing: You can export or share reports with your doctor or care team
- If you are in crisis: if you tell OSCAR something that suggests your safety is at risk, OSCAR always gives you the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Coming soon, and only if you turn them on:
- Family sharing: letting specific family members view your health trends
- Family alerts: a text to the person you name if something seems off — including, if you agree during setup, a text asking them to check on you when you have told OSCAR something that suggests your safety is at risk. That text will never repeat what you said.
All sharing is opt-in, revocable, and controlled entirely by you. This page will say so when each of these is available.
Text Messages (SMS)
OSCAR sends text messages only to people who have joined to receive them — a family member or friend the resident has named, who confirms their own number with a one-time code. Messages are safety and wellbeing alerts about the resident; they never contain health readings or anything the resident said.
- We do not sell or share your SMS opt-in data or personal information with third parties for marketing purposes. This applies to every OSCAR at Home text message program.
- Stop any time. Reply STOP to any message from OSCAR to stop receiving them, or HELP for help. Message frequency varies; message and data rates may apply.
- Texts are delivered through our messaging provider solely to send the message.
Children's Privacy
OSCAR is designed for adult users. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If OSCAR is used in a household with children, their health data should only be entered by a parent or guardian who manages their profile.
Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will notify users through the OSCAR system and update this page. We will never retroactively reduce your privacy protections without consent.
